First, register as a library customer. The way of registration depends on which group of customers you represent.
UEF degree and postgraduate students UEF Open University students and staff members, who have their information in Peppi
- Download the Tuudo mobile app and register a library customer. You can use the library services immediately.

UEF staff members, whose information cannot be found in Peppi
- Register as a library customer by filling in the registration form for UEFians. You will receive an email notification when the registration is complete. After receiving the email, you can log in to UEF Primo and use e-books and other e-materials. You do not need a library card for this.
Customers outside the University of Eastern Finland and members of KUH staff who do not have a UEF username
- Fill out a registration form for other customers. You will receive an email notification when the registration is complete. After receiving the email, you can log in to UEF Primo. When you log in for the first time, the password is your library card number.
- You can change your password by contacting library customer service at library@uef.fi. They will provide you with more detailed instructions on how to change your password.

Library card
You only need a library card - digital or traditional - if you want to borrow printed books.
- If you sign up as a library customer using the Tuudo mobile app, you will have access to an digital library card.
- If you use the customer registration form, you get access to a traditional library card. Pick up the traditional card from the library when registration is complete, and you have been notified by email. When picking up the card, you need a photo ID.
- If you later use the Tuudo mobile app, it will combine your traditional library card information with your information in Tuudo, and you will get access to an digital library card.
KUH staff
After receiving a library card, you may request a separate KUH remote access ID from the KUH Medical Library if needed.

You will run into UEF Primo constantly on library issues. UEF Primo is the library's own search service, where all the materials the library has acquired, both printed and online, can be found in one place.
In UEF Primo, you manage your own loan matters: reservations, renewals and fees. In addition, you can save your own favourite books and articles in UEF Primo.
From UEF Primo, you can also reach a huge amount of internationally published articles and other publications.

Both print and electronic books can be found in the search service UEF Primo. You can search for a book by its title, author or words describing the topic.
Printed books
UEF Primo's location guide tells you in which bookshelf you can find the book in the library. Read more about locating a book in a library.
E-books
You recognise an e-book in UEF Primo by the text 'Available Online'. Click the link and again the link below 'Full text availability' in order to access the book. If necessary, log in using your UEF username and password. Persons working in KUH should have their own separate usernames.

If you don't find the specific book that you need from UEF Primo, you can order the book as an interlibrary loan (the service is subject to a charge).
Journals
Both print and electronic journals can be found by the journal title on search service UEF Primo. Check out the journal info in UEF Primo to see the date range which the journal is available either online or printed. Not all material published online is automatically at the university’s disposal.
In order to read the journal remotely, use your UEF or KUH ID for logging in.
Articles
Select "International articles" search on UEF Primo. A specific article can be found using the article title or the author’s name. You can perform a search on specific subject as well.
In order to read the article remotely, use your UEF or KUH user-id for logging in. Please notice, that you may also see results that won't open as full text. In that case you can order the article as an interlibrary loan.
Additionally, articles can be searched via the discipline-specific databases. Check the most important databases in your discipline.
Loan period for course books is two weeks, four weeks for other books.
You can conveniently renew your loans in UEF Primo or in Tuudo. The renewal can be done until the maximum renewal date (600 days) is achieved. If the book has a reservation on it, it cannot be renewed.
Reading room copies can be borrowed overnight or for the weekend.
E-books have varying loan periods depending on the publisher.
If a book you need is on the bookshelf at the other campus or has been borrowed out, make a reservation on it via UEF Primo.
Reservations fees
Reserving a book from the other campus is free of charge, as well as reserving a book that is on loan at the moment.
If you request for a book that is available at your own campus library, you must pay a fee of 2 euros.
Reading room copies of course books can be reserved for overnight and over the weekend. These reservations are free of charge. See further information about borrowing reading room copies.
UEF students and staff can access the e-books, online articles and other e-materials acquired by the library through the library's search service UEF Primo using their UEF username and password. There are two routes:
A) Register as a library customer using the Tuudo mobile app or the customer registration form. All students, and staff members with information in Peppi, register through Tuudo. If your information is not in Peppi, register with the registration form. Once registered, log in to UEF Primo with your UEF username and password and access e-resources remotely via UEF Primo.
B) Find the material you want in UEF Primo, open the e-material link from the search results and enter your UEF username and password on the remote access server.
You can choose the method of use according to your needs, but we recommend registering as a customer of the library. Registered, you can take advantage of UEF Primo's customer functionalities and get access to all the resources with a single login. For more information go to remote access of electronic resources.
KUH Medical Library staff can receive remote access IDs from their own library.
If you don't have UEF user-id, you can use the library's acquired electronic resources in the campus libraries only. However, UEF Primo also contains a lot of freely accessible online material. You will recognize them by the tag 'Open access'.
If a loan is overdue, the fee is 50 cents / book / day.
Any reservation left not picked up will cost you 1 euro.
If you request from your own campus library a book that is available on the self, a fee of 2 euros is charged.
If the book is drenched in coffee or even totally lost, you will have to compensate for it.

The campus libraries are located in Carelia building in Joensuu and in Snellmania building in Kuopio.
In campus libraries there is a possibility to access the library outside the opening hours: 24/7 Self-study facilities. You need a personal patch, which you can apply online.
At the library, you can find different kinds of spaces for working, studying and relaxing.

The library has computers and plug points for laptops. The computers cannot be reserved beforehand.
The computer areas may at times be crowded, so be sure to follow the common rules.

In the library, you can print and copy documents by using your personal printing quota. You can also scan documents.
Open wireless network is free to use in the whole campus area.
Yes and no. In some parts of the library a moderate use of voice is allowed, in other places you must be totally silent. This is for letting people to work in peace.
The quietest place in Joensuu campus library is the reading room at the first floor. See a map of sound zones for detailed information about all facilities.
In Kuopio campus library there are no specific sound zones. You have to adjust your use of voice according to the situation and other customers.
There is an accessible entrance to all libraries available. The staff will assist you in using the collections. For print-disabled students there are books in accessible formats.
