Supporting education and research in the Global South is part of the University of Eastern Finland's (UEF) global responsibility, which aims at enhancing sustainable development, promoting equality and reducing poverty, in alignment with the development policy of Finland and the EU, and with the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs). We actively collaborate with organisations and universities in the Global South and have a long history of development cooperation, going all the way back to the 1970s.
UEF's collaboration with higher education institutions and international partners in the Global South is implemented through various funding instruments and funding agencies, governments and international NGOs.

UEF-UNEP Course on MEAs
University of Eastern Finland (UEF) - United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Course on Multilateral Environmental Agreements is a high profile two week Course on MEAs, international environmental law-making and diplomacy. It is organised annually in cooperation of the University of Eastern Finland and United Nations Environment Programme, with a changing course venue and theme each year.

BUIBRI: Building bridges between Europe and China to strengthen the social work profession
BUIBRI aims to strengthen the Chinese higher education capacity in building bridges between social work education and working life. BUIBRI is an Erasmus+ Key Action 2 Capacity Building in the Field of Higher Education project funded by the European Commission. The project is coordinated by UEF and partners are the University of Hertfordshire, Gothenburg University, Fudan University, SYSU and Nanjing Normal University. Learn more about this project.
FishEDU: Capacity building in fisheries and aquaculture education in the Kyrgyz Republic
FishEDU is a collaboration between UEF and the Kyrgyz National Agrarian University aiming to provide an enabling learning environment for fisheries and aquaculture education in the Kyrgyz Republic. FishEDU is funded under the HEI ICI programme by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. Learn more about this project.
Food safety and quality management training for food sector experts in the Kyrgyz Republic
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) implements the Aid for Trade project in Central Asia, working at promoting inclusive growth through the promotion of green productive capacitiesand competitiveness. The Aid for Trade project links UEF and knowledge institutions in the Kyrgyz Republic to address quality and safety management within the Kyrgyz food sector. In addition to training, the project produced an English and Russian language guide and video on food safety and quality management sharing Finnish experiences.
SuMNatuRE: Sustainable management of natural resources in Mozambique
SumNaturRE aims to enhance sustainable development and democracy in Mozambique by promoting higher education and increasing the knowledge on sustainable natural resource and land-use planning. The project is coordinated by the University of Jyväskylä and UEF is a partner. Partners in Mozambique are the Eduardo Mondlane University and Zambeze University. Learn more about this project.
