Paid Separate Study Right (MEO)
Study Selection and Applying for Study Rights
The paid separate study right can be applied for either individual courses or for several courses within a study module with a single application, provided that the course names, scope, and schedule are clearly stated in the application.
The available courses and application periods are listed on faculty-specific application forms. Applicants must take into account the schedule of the course implementation.
Course Selection in the Philosophical Faculty
The application period for the paid separate study right in Ukrainian language and culture is:
- August 1–16, 2025 for courses starting in autumn 2025
- November 1–16, 2025 for courses starting in spring 2026
It is only possible to apply for individual courses in Ukrainian studies.
Each faculty decides on eligibility, selection criteria, and admission. Selection for paid separate studies is based on the criteria defined in the application process. In some study subjects, entrance or proficiency tests may also be organized.
Applicants must consider the course schedule and apply for the study right well in advance before the courses begin. The processing time for applications is approximately three weeks. The decision will be sent to the applicant by email.
An applicant who is granted a paid separate study right by a faculty or the Language Centre is considered a student of that faculty or Language Centre. Guidance during studies, recording of completed credits, possible recognition of prior learning, and issuing of certificates for MEO studies are handled by the respective faculty or Language Centre.
Study Fees
The study fees for paid separate studies at UEF are:
- €15 per ECTS credit for study packages
- €20 per ECTS credit for individual courses
The fee is invoiced after registration. Registration is binding, and paid fees are non-refundable.
The study fees are subject to public law and enforceable without a court decision (Universities Act 558/2009, Section 8).
Duration of Study Right
The study right is specific to each course and its implementation. Completing the studies requires that the study right is valid. The duration of the study right is defined by the schedule of the course implementation. The study right is granted for a maximum of one academic year at a time, ending no later than July 31, or for the duration of the course.
Temporary Interruption of Studies
The study right may only be interrupted due to medical or health problems lasting more than one month (if the sick leave begins after registration). Interruption requires the student to submit a medical certificate to the Open University as soon as possible for case-by-case consideration. Transfers of study rights based on a medical certificate must be made during the validity of the study right. An extension may be granted once, up to the end of the following academic year. Paid study fees will not be refunded.
The university’s autumn semester runs from August 1 to December 31, and the spring semester from January 1 to July 31.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of prior learning refers to procedures by which a student’s existing knowledge and skills can be assessed and accepted as part of their studies. A student with a paid separate study right may apply in writing for recognition of prior learning, provided that the competence matches the objectives and content of the curriculum. The processing of the application is included in the study fee and requires a valid study right for the relevant course. The student must pay the study fee even for courses they apply to have recognized.
