Studies
Studying technical physics forms a basis for scientific thinking. Problem-solving skills, determination, an analytical approach, interpersonal skills, and innovativeness are needed in working life to be able to produce and apply the latest information.
In the Department of Technical Physics, you can study computational physics, medical physics, materials physics, and atmospheric physics. Various main theories and laws in physics are studied first before taking a more in-depth approach. Learning to master mathematical aids, theory, and numerical methods is key in physics. These skills are needed when developing e.g. climate models.
Physicists graduate to interesting, challenging and independent experts’ tasks in companies and research institutes. Their work includes developing research methods, designing and building equipment, deploying new technologies, and applying computational methods.

Research
Our research is internationally recognised. In all the four areas of research in physics, we rank high in scientific evaluations and acknowledgments when measured by e.g. centres of excellence and Flagships appointed by the Academy of Finland, funding granted by the European Research Council (ERC), and publications in respected multidisciplinary scientific journals (Nature, Science).

Research areas and infrastructure
In aerosol physics, we research particle formation in the atmosphere and the effect of particle-cloud interaction on climate. The research is carried out by combining the results of laboratory and field tests with theory and models with the aim of understanding and predicting both natural and human factors that have an impact on climate change.
Infrastructure
Computational Physics research includes development of observation methods for, e.g., medical, industrial, geophysical and atmospherical applications. The research utilizes and develops mathematical modelling and inverse problems theory and methods.

The aims of medical physics research are to promote health and develop diagnostics and more effective therapies. Decades of research and uncompromising quality control are underlying the development of anthropometric measuring tools.
Infrastructure
In materials physics, we research e.g. the use of nanomaterials in targeted therapy and imaging. The aim of nanomaterials research is to develop new methods for removing low concentrations of metal from water, which is essential in the analysis of mine water, for example. Thin film research areas include developing new bio-based coating materials that protect against corrosion and wear.
SIB Labs services
SIB Labs offers a professional, accessible infrastructure with competent operators. The multi-disciplinary, constantly evolving hardware infrastructure is worth nearly 20 million euros. It consists of more than 130 research instruments with wide-ranging applications, as well as a considerable amount of specialised laboratory equipment.
SIB Labs has extensive experience of developing competence in the fields of materials technology and the transfer of that competence into commercial use.
