The School of Medicine is a multidisciplinary educational and research institution of the University of Eastern Finland. We work in close cooperation with Kuopio University Hospital and various hospital districts and health care and specialist medical care providers in the area. We cooperate with other Finnish universities through the national network of universities, with Savonia University of Applied Sciences being our key partner locally.
UEF School of Medicine organises tuition in the fields of Medicine, Dentistry, Biomedicine, Nutrition and Health Promotion. In addition to Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes, we offer professional and scientific postgraduate education and specialisation studies. The School of Medicine is also an active international educator. We offer two English-language Master’s degree programmes: the Master’s Degree Programme in Public Health and the Master’s Degree Programme in Biomedicine.
The strength of our research is derived from the long-term and internationally acknowledged scientific methods of elucidating molecular-level causes of key chronic deceases, as well as developing methods of their prevention and treatment.
In order to achieve flexibility in operations, the School of Medicine is divided into the following units: Institute of Biomedicine, Institute of Dentistry, Institute of Public Health and Clinical Nutrition, and Institute of Clinical Medicine.

Studies
The School of Medicine is an important educator of specialists for health care and specialist medical care, including physicians, dentists, nutritional therapists, specialist biomedical scientists, nutritionists and health promotion specialists. The School of Medicine is also an active international educator. We offer two English-language Master's degree programmes: Master of Science Degree Programme in Public Health and Master of Science Degree Programme in Biomedicine. We also cooperate with international exchange programmes in various fields of science. Some of our study modules are also available through the Open University.
Our research groups actively participate in research activities, providing an excellent stepping stone to scientific postgraduate studies. Scientific doctoral studies at the School of Medicine are arranged under the UEF Doctoral School and the associated doctoral programmes offered at the Faculty of Health Sciences. We also provide both professional and scientific postgraduate education to people who are pursuing or have already completed a higher university degree in medicine or health sciences.
Our range of specialist training covers 49 fields of medicine and 10 fields of dentistry. The objective of specialist training for physicians/dentists is to deepen their scientific knowledge, improve their information acquisition skills and provide them with the knowledge and skills needed for the duties of a specialist in medicine or dentistry, maintaining their professional competence and further developing their field of speciality.
Please note that in Finland, medical studies constitute a continuous, six-year programme where Bachelor’s and Master’s degree studies are integrated to form a Licentiate degree (360 ECTS credits). There is no English track for medicine in Finland. The only way to become a medical student in Finland is to attend the entrance examination that is held once a year at the end of May. The examination is the same for all medical faculties/schools in Finland. The entrance examination is in Finnish (or in Swedish), and the medical studies here in Kuopio are conducted in Finnish only.
