Research Assessment Exercise 2019, UEFRAE2019

The University of Eastern Finland carries out a Research Assessment Exercise in 2019 (UEFRAE2019) to evaluate its research activities in 2015-2018 and to identify research strengths for its future strategy for 2021-2030.

Evaluation Criteria

UEFRAE2019 is a tool for evaluating the university’s current research performance and its future potential and renewal. The following aspects will be evaluated from an international perspective:

  1. Research excellence and scientific quality
  2. Research collaboration
  3. Novelty, societal relevance and impact of research activities
  4. Operational conditions
  5. Strategic visions
  6. Implementation plan

Unit of Evaluation

The unit of evaluation in UEFRAE2019 is a research community, i.e. not an organisational unit of UEF (such as a department or a school). A research community is a thematic, multidisciplinary, internationally networked research community with an identified research focus.


Evaluation process

UEF researchers have proposed research communities to be evaluated in UEFRAE2019. The proposals were evaluated by the university’s rectors and deans, who also made the final selections. The research communities selected for UEFRAE2019 will complete a self-evaluation report in spring 2019. Based on these self-evaluation reports, the research communities will be evaluated by an external panel of experts in autumn 2019.
