Photonics Research Community combines all research and education in optics and photonics at the University of Eastern Finland. The multidisciplinary research consortium is composed of experts in biology, chemistry, computer science, medicine, and fundamental and applied physics. Close research collaboration also extends to electronics, forestry, environment, geography, medicine and pharmacy.
Since 2013, photonics across departments and two campuses has been coordinated by the Institute of Photonics, which is the core of the Photonics Research Community. Institute of Photonics is the member of the Photonics Research and Innovation (PREIN) Flagship, where other partners are Tampere University, Aalto University and VTT. Photonics infrastructure belongs on the roadmap for Finnish research infrastructures.
Photonics research consists of various topics from fundamental properties of light, e.g., electromagnetic coherence and polarization theories, and light-matter interaction to large scale fabrication and various applications of optical micro and nano structures and 3D printed (additive manufactured) macroscopic optics. Photonics materials research includes also carbon-based and other types of nano-materials. Integrated optics builds the route to miniaturization for full optical communication and sensing systems. Applied research also covers computational color research, biological and environmental applications of photonics, and optical imaging.
Photonics Research Community actively aims to advance the use of photonics in different research areas, and also to support other UEF research communities. Besides education in Finnish, International Master’s Degree Programme, three Erasmus Mundus programs, and two Double Degree programs as well as Doctoral programs offer career options in photonics.
