UEF secures 9.5 million euros of funding to strengthen its research

The Academy of Finland has granted 9.5 million euros of funding to the University of Eastern Finland to strengthen the university’s research profile. The total amount applied for by the universities was 175 million euros, and the Academy’s funding totals 100 million euros. Funding was granted to nine universities.

“Our success in securing this competitive profiling funding indicates that our strategic choices have been successful, that our research communities have very strong scientific expertise, and that we’ve succeeded in building a distinct, interdisciplinary research profile for our university,” Rector Jukka Mönkkönen says.

The six-year funding secured by the university will be used to strengthen the quality and impact of research in research areas pertaining to the global contexts and interactions related to borders, mobilities and encounters, multimodal approaches for translational medicine, and the various effects of climate change.

According to the evaluation panel, the profiling measures proposed by UEF are significant and very concrete, allowing the university to promote its strategic profiling and enhance the quality of its research in collaboration with other Finnish and international institutions.

The aim of the funding is to accelerate the strategic profiling of Finnish universities and support the improvement of the quality of research across the university landscape based on international peer review.
