The Academy of Finland has granted 9.1 million euros of funding to the University of Eastern Finland to strengthen the university’s research profile. This was already the sixth time the Academy of Finland granted funding to Finnish universities to strengthen their research profiles, with the overall funding in this call amounting to 100 million euros. The University of Eastern Finland was once again successful in the evaluation.
The university will use the funding granted by the Academy of Finland to strengthen the quality and impact of its research. The six-year funding secured by the university will be used to promote research activities in areas of significance to the university, which pertain to drug development and discovery, neurosciences, the forest-based bioeconomy, and the development of technologies that make use of photonics.
“The systematic steps taken to develop our areas of strength have generated research that is visible and impactful both on national and international level,” Rector Jukka Mönkkönen says.
According to an international panel of experts assessing universities’ funding applications, the University of Eastern Finland’s multidisciplinary research in the areas represented in the application enjoys international recognition. The university's identified targets of development and the measures it intends to take are ambitious and support global, national and local development alike.
The aim of the Academy of Finland’s profiling funding is to support and speed up the strategic profiling of Finnish universities in order to improve the quality of research.
