We offer high-quality study programmes for Master’s degree and doctoral students in three major subjects: Health and Social Management, Health and Human Services Informatics, and Health Economics. The key research themes are the management, organisation, economy, informatics, and impact of health and social services. Our guiding principles are internationality, multidisciplinarity, and having an impact on society. Founded in 1979 and located on the Kuopio Campus, the Department of Health and Social Management is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies.

The University of Eastern Finland's Department of Health and Social Management is the leading provider of Master’s degree education in these fields. Our degree programmes turn out top experts for diverse and demanding tasks in the public, private and third sectors. Our interdisciplinary education is based on high-quality research, and we develop its applicability to the changing operating environment with practical actors.
We are a pioneer in Master’s Degree programmes in Health and Social Management and the only Finnish university that offers Master’s degree education in Health and Human Services Informatics, Health Economy and Rescue Service Management.
Our degree programmes will additionally develop your expertise relating to the impact of services and key economic and information management challenges. Our Master’s degree programmes rely on blended learning, which combines contact teaching and distance learning.
The Department of Health and Social Management also coordinates the Multiprofessional health and social care studies module that brings together students completing different health and social sector degrees at the University of Eastern Finland. We are also active in the Open University and in the field of continuous learning.
The Department is also a hub of economics and health economics education. Our Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Economics focuses on environmental aspects and perspectives of social justice, well-being and sustainability.

Research
Our international, multidisciplinary research produces new information on the issues of management, service system, economy, and informatics in health and social care. The research is multidisciplinary and uses innovative approaches and methods. Our research is linked to two of the university’s multidisciplinary research areas: Effectiveness in Health Care and Social Services and Learning in Digitised Society.
The research group of Health and Social Management examines the integration, management and organisation of health and social services in work communities, organisations, and society.
The research group of Health and Human Services Informatics focuses on the organisation and steering of information management, use of information and communication technology, knowledge management, and data models and structures.
The research group of Health Economics analyses and evaluates the overall operation and functionality of the health and social services system from the viewpoint of economics. All three research groups prioritise social impact in their research.
