Pathways to Textuality is a one-day symposium held via Zoom on Thursday, 24th February 2022 – which would have been Michael’s 74th birthday.

The focus will be a series of papers – delivered by Tony Berber Sardinah (Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo, Brazil) Susan Huston (Birmingham University), Michaela Mahlberg & Viola Wiegand (Birmingham University), and Alan Partington (University of Bologna) amongst others. The day will conclude with a session exchanging memories of Michael Hoey.

In parallel to the symposium, there will be a poster section – these will be displayed in a dedicated online space. Contributions present ideas and theories Michael Hoey developed in his four key works: On the Surface of Discourse (Allen & Unwin, 1983), Patterns of Lexis in Text (OUP, 1991), Textual Interaction (Routledge, 2001) and, of course Lexical Priming (Routledge, 2005). There are, of course, a large number of chapters, papers and articles Michael has produced – these books are merely chosen as markers, cornerstones so to say.

Please see more information and register by 22.2. on the symposium web page. Welcome!
