The covered topics in this course include the basic descriptive statistics (measures of central tendency and measures of dispersion i.e. variance, standard deviation, standard error, confidence interval) and the basic inferential statistics that are used to test hypotheses (t-test, chi2-test, analysis of variance, correlation, regression, non-parametric analyses).
Learning outcomes
After this course, the student:
- can recognize different kinds of data and variables
- can explain how to describe data
- can explain what is a hypothesis
- can choose the correct statistical method for testing a hypothesis
- are familiar with the theories and calculations that the statistical programs use in the analyses
- are able to interpret the output from the statistical programs and draw conclusions about the hypothesis based on the results
Study methods:
Online lectures (not mandatory to be present), online reading, Moodle exercises, SPSS exercises. 81 hours.
This is an online course. The course is taught in an online Moodle learning environment 26.9. - 9.12.2025. Registration is open 4.8.- 22.9.2025.
You need to have access to SPSS software to study this course. SPSS software can be downloaded onto your personal computer after registration and receiving right to study.

You can attend the lectures online. Attending the lectures is not mandatory. The lectures are recorded.
Study materials:
The course is loosely based on the books Streiner & Norman - Biostatistics: the bare essentials and Donnelly - The complete idiot's guide to statistics.
Evaluation criteria: Pass/fail. To pass the course, the student needs to complete all the mandatory sections in Moodle.
