Enrollment for the 2026–2027 academic year begins on August 6, 2026.
Social Sciences Studies at the Open University
Studies in Social Sciences consist of sociology and social and public policy, as well as social scientific thinking. The module provides students with a basic understanding of society as an object of enquiry, the materialization of social structures in everyday life, and public policy in the context of a welfare state. Upon completion, students will be familiar with key theoretical approaches in the social sciences and will understand their role in analyzing society. They will also gain experience in reading social science research texts.
Social science knowledge and understanding can be applied and used effectively across a wide range of fields in working life. The studies are well suited as continuing education for professionals and as a minor subject in many different degree programs. They also provide an open university pathway to becoming a degree student at UEF.
At the Open University, students can complete the 25 ECTS Basic Studies in Social Sciences module, as well as individual courses. The studies are offered online as self-study courses, allowing them to be completed from any location.
This study module is part of our Bachelor's Degree Programme in Social Sciences.

Study information and guidance
The studies are completed independently as online courses in the Moodle learning environment. Courses are open from 6 August 2026 to 30 April 2027, and each course must be completed during its designated period in either the autumn or spring semester. The courses include lecture recordings and written materials. Based on these, students complete various written assignments. It is recommended that you carefully review the detailed completion methods and schedules of the courses during the planning stage of your studies, before enrolling. Studying is independent and requires self-direction, good study skills, and a structured approach.
