This course is part of the YUFE Skills of the Future Programme.
The online course covers the following topics:
- Introduction to the concepts of adult education and sustainable development.
- Adult education, education policy and sustainable development.
- The role of education in contributing to socially, culturally, economically, and ecologically sustainable lifestyles and communities.
- The interplay between technology and media with sustainability education.
- Global Citizenship Education and Critical Perspectives
Learning outcomes
Students will:
- Be familiar with the concept of adult education and sustainable development within a sociocultural context.
- Be able to discuss how sustainable development is visible within Finnish adult education policy.
- Be familiar with the role of education in contributing to sustainable lifestyles and communities.
- Be familiar with the connection between non-formal adult education and sustainable development.
- Be familiar with the role of technology and media in sustainability education.

Study methods: Lectures 10 h (hybrid, later also recordings); in online learning environment, learning tasks 30 h and online exam 1 h; individual work 94 h. Lectures are organized in hybrid format (at Joensuu campus and online) in the Autumn semester, and lecture recordings will be available for the Spring semester.
Autumn deadline for learning tasks and online exam is in November, Spring deadlines are in March and May.
The course online learning environment in Digicampus will open on 22.09.2025. More instructions about course assignments and learning material can be found there. You will receive starting instructions via email after completing the course registration.
In addition to the lectures, students will find a list of Open access literature and other materials needed in the learning tasks and in online exam in the online learning environment. Students are also encouraged to find additional literature themselves.
The study fee is 20 euros per ECTS credit for individual study units, and 15 euros per credit for study modules. The study fee is paid at registration.

By paying the study fee, the student receives a temporary right to study that entitles them to attend a particular course. The right to study is course-specific, and is required to complete the course as specified in the syllabus for the term, covering both teaching and course exams. If the course is continuously open for registration, the maximum time to complete the course is from 1 August to 31 July for that academic year.
