Learnig outcomes: After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • recognize reasons for the ongoing biodiversity crisis and its consequences to the human society and personal life
  • explore own connection to nature and diverse values you assign to it
  • recognize a variety of approaches and tools to protect biodiversity, increase biodiversity and promote sustainable use of biodiversity
  • apply the issues to own field of studies/work and learn how to be part of the solution

The study unit develops the following generic skills/generic competences: digitalization, ethics, internationality, sustainability and responsibility, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise, interaction and communication.

Content: The course consists of five modules and a pre-course part. The contents studied in the course:

  • Biodiversity crises and the concept of biodiversity
  • Threats to biodiversity
  • Protecting biodiversity
  • Topical discussions and questions in the field of biodiversity

Each module contains videos, reading materials and exercises. There are different kind of exercises to deepen thinking and to learn multidisciplinary, and quizzes to test knowledge. All the reading material and videos can be watched without passing the quizzes, but completion of course requires passing the quizzes/tests in the right order and making other exercises.

Study materials: Online material, which includes videos, audios, reading materials and different kind of exercises.

After completing the course, students can continue their studies with Biodiversity.now B.

Modes of study: Independent online studying (54 hours) includes videos, reading materials, exercises and tests. Passing the course requires passing the exercises and tests.

The course is available online between Jan 1st and May 31st, 2027. More information, the description and timelines of the course can be found from Peppi study guide. In their studies, open university students must adhere to the same schedules and study modes as degree students.

This course is a part of an Open badge study module, Metsien monimuotoisuus osaamismerkki. Most of the other courses of the Open badge study module are taught in Finnish.

Study units cost 20 € / ECTS credit. This price holds for the academic year 2026-2027.

Registration online:

  1. Go to the registration service using the button on this page. You will see information about the course, which you can review before registering. Add the course to your study cart. You can also add other courses to the cart before proceeding. 
  2. Log in via the Suomi.fi service (without Finnish identification methods, choose 'skip identification'), fill in your personal details on the registration form, and confirm your registration. Pay for the studies at the time of registration.
  3. Processing the registration usually takes 2–5 business days, and at most 10 business days. After processing, you will receive an email with a link to the instructions for starting your studies. The message will include a link to our beginning instructions page where you can find all instructions on how to get started. Please read the beginning instructions carefully.

UEF username 

  • If you are studying at the University of Eastern Finland for the first time, you will receive separate instructions on how to activate your UEF username. 
  • If you already have a UEF username, change your password. 

Your username will receive the necessary access rights once your study right begins.
