University of Eastern Finland succeeded in GreenMetric sustainability ranking – international competition increased again

The University of Eastern Finland maintained its good placement in the international GreenMetric sustainability ranking for universities. This year, the University of Eastern Finland was ranked 39th. Last year, the university was ranked five spots closer to the top, but this year there were almost 100 more universities taking part in the ranking, totalling 1,050 participants.

“The University of Eastern Finland’s ranking continues to be excellent. Competition at the top of the ranking has increased significantly, which is actually a positive thing, since it shows that universities are working on advancing sustainability,” Sustainable Development Specialist Maiju Eskelinen from the University of Eastern Finland points out.

The total score of the University of Eastern Finland rose by a few hundred points despite the lower ranking. The University of Eastern Finland received 8,650 point out of a total of 10,000. Last year, only the number one ranked Wageningen University from the Netherlands reached 9,000 points. It is a clear sign of increased international competition that this year there were already fourteen universities from around the world that received over 9,000 points.

The University of Eastern Finland participated in the UI GreenMetric ranking already for the seventh time. The ranking compares universities on the basis of how well they take environmental responsibility and sustainable development into consideration in their activities. Evaluation is carried out in several categories, including setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation, and education.

For the evaluation of the different categories, universities are also required to clearly indicate the measures they have taken and demonstrate how these are continuously developed. The University of Eastern Finland received full points in the categories of waste management and water. The University of Eastern Finland has also done well in the category of energy and climate change, ranking 15th. This year, the university also rose to the top 100 in the education category and was ranked 80th.
