UEF’s result from ordinary activities for the financial year 2022 was balanced

The university’s operational and financial result for 2022 was good. The result from ordinary activities was as planned, and the university’s income and expenses were in balance. According to feedback from interim negotiations with the Ministry of Education and Culture, the university has been successful in implementing its strategy. The University of Eastern Finland also passed an audit of the Finnish Education Evaluation Centre, FINEEC. In the audit, a sense of community and a multidisciplinary approach were identified as strengths of the university. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has significant implications for the university’s activities both in the short and the long term. The University of Eastern Finland has frozen all existing collaboration with Russian and Belarusian organisations and offered its support to Ukrainian students fleeing the war by, for example, making courses available to them free of charge.

“The university’s results have remained on a good and stable level, and our financial situation is balanced. Based on the results and feedback received, we have succeeded, in accordance with our strategy, in strengthening our research and education, and in promoting multidisciplinarity and an open operating culture at the university. Thanks to all our staff and students, we have an extremely solid foundation for success also in the future,” Rector Jukka Mönkkönen says.

In 2022, the University of Eastern Finland awarded 149 doctoral degrees, 1,626 Master’s degrees and 1,312 Bachelor's degrees. Compared to 2021, there was a slight decrease in the number of degrees awarded. Thanks to increases in the university’s student intake, the number of students in degree programmes grew from last year. The university’s publishing activities were on a good level. The university has been successful in calls for funding. From the Horizon Europe programme, for example, the university secured a positive funding decision for 31 projects, with the total value amounting to 16 million euros.

The university’s loss for the financial year amounted to -27.5 million euros, of which unrealised value adjustments of investments accounted for -27.3 million euros. The actual operational result was -5.8 million euros. Operational activities are financed by income from investment activities and therefore the result of the activities can be planned at a loss. The planned operational result was –6.4 million euros, with the actual result therefore almost as planned. The government’s matched funding campaign ended on 30 June 2022. During the fund-raising campaign, the University of Eastern Finland attracted 3.8 million euros in donations, in addition to which the government granted 3.6 million euros of matched funding to the university, to be added to basic capital.

The financial statement for 2022 was discussed by the UEF Board on 13 April. The financial statement will be discussed by the University Collegiate Body on 11 May.
