UEF’s result for the financial year amounts to 32.3 million euros – high investment income played a considerable role

The university’s operational and financial result for 2021 is good. The coronavirus pandemic and the related restrictions had an impact on the university’s operations, but the operational objectives were nevertheless achieved well.

In 2021, the University of Eastern Finland awarded 154 doctoral degrees, 1,768 Master’s degrees and 1,432 Bachelor's degrees. The number of Master’s degrees awarded was, once again, an all-time record for the university. In addition, the number of articles published by the university’s researchers in international journals grew, and there was also improvement in their quality. New initiatives were taken, for example, to develop the university’s research infrastructures and to improve the status of grant-funded researchers by offering them part-time contracts of employment. The university's interaction with other actors was strengthened as the first doctoral students working simultaneously for the University of Eastern Finland and for another employer began in their shared doctoral student positions.

The university’s profit for the financial year amounted to 32.3 million euros, of which investment and financing activities accounted for 26.3 million euros. The share of investment activities includes unrealised value adjustments amounting to 13.7 million euros in 2021. The university’s operational result, which includes government funding for the higher education institutions, external funding and corresponding expenses, amounted to 5.0 million euros. This includes 3.3 million euros of frontloaded income items, the corresponding expenditure being incurred in subsequent years as planned.

The actual operational result was 1.7 million euros. Revenue and expenses increased from the previous year both through increased government funding and increased project activities. Due to the restrictions caused by the pandemic, costs were lower than planned, particularly as regards travel expenses.

“Despite the challenging circumstances, the university has succeeded in improving its performance and enhancing its impact, and our financial situation is stable. Our entire staff and all our students are to be thanked: these exceptional times have put a strain on our sense of community and coping,” Rector Jukka Mönkkönen says.

The financial statement for 2021 was discussed by the Board of the University of Eastern Finland on 31 March 2020.  The financial statement will be discussed by the University Collegiate Body on 18 May.
