UEF’s Faculty of Science and Forestry to change its name, new professional titles introduced for staff

The name of the Faculty of Science and Forestry of the University of Eastern Finland will be changed to the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology, effective from 1 January 2023.

“The new name of the faculty takes into account our education in technology, which will begin in 2023,” says Kari Lehtinen, the Dean of the faculty.

In the spring 2023 joint application, the faculty’s student intake into the field of technology will be more than one hundred students.

“It is important for the name of the faculty to include the word ‘technology’ so that those wishing to enter the field can recognise education that is suitable for them,” Vice Dean Markku Hauta-Kasari and Professor Jari Kaipio say.

The University of Eastern Finland comprises four faculties: the Philosophical Faculty, the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology, the Faculty of Health Sciences, and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies.

“As part of the university's Strategic Implementation Programme, career models have been developed at the University of Eastern Finland, with the staff involved in the work in various contexts,” says Director of Administration Tuomo Meriläinen.

“The focus is on both academic and other staff, and the models have a vertical and a horizontal perspective. During the work, professional titles relating to different career phases, among other things, have been reviewed.”

From the perspective of career model development, it was deemed necessary to introduce new professional titles in the University Regulations, to make some changes to existing ones, and to specify the qualification requirements.

The new professional titles are Senior Clinical Lecturer and Staff Scientist. The title Early-Stage Researcher will be changed to Doctoral Researcher. The new professional titles will be taken into use as from 1 August 2022.

“People with strong expertise in research infrastructures and research methodology can be recruited to Staff Scientist roles, thus ensuring the long-term development of our high-level research,” Rector Jukka Mönkkönen says.

“In future, we will consistently refer to everyone completing their doctoral dissertation as Doctoral Researcher, regardless of whether they are completing their postgraduate studies in an employment relationship, on a grant, or without any external funding. This is our way showing appreciation for people completing their PhD,” Academic Rector Tapio Määttä says.
