Clinical Pathology and Forensic Medicine

Pathology is concerned with the diagnosis of diseases. The discipline provides basic education for medical students (general and systematic pathology as well as forensic medicine). Pathology courses are also given to students of dentistry, life sciences and pharmacy. The training of pathology residents is organized in cooperation with the Department of Clinical Pathology situated in the Kuopio University Hospital.

Pathology as a discipline was established in 1972 in the Medical Faculty of Kuopio College. Kuopio University was established 1984 and since 2010 it has been a part of the University of Eastern Finland. The discipline of pathology belongs to the Faculty of Health Sciences, School of Medicine and Institute of Clinical Medicine.

The facility is situated on the Kuopio campus, in the Canthia building. The staff consists of two professors, a senior lecturer, a university lecturer, a younger investigator, a teaching coordinator, postdoctoral researchers, a research director, a secretary, laboratory technicians as well as a number of doctoral students.

Research

Several clinicopathological research projects investigating cancer genetics and genomics, the importance epigenetic factors as well changes in the tumour microenvironment are taking place as part of the so-called spearhead project "Cancer Center of Eastern Finland (CCEF):
