The online course covers the following topics:

Introduction to the main concepts of the course

  • Theoretical Traditions in Sociology of Education
  • The Meaning of Education
  • Sustainability Education in Finland

Learning outcomes

After the course student:

  • has knowledge of basic research frameworks and concepts of social scientific research and the sociology of education
  • knows the societal functions of education, and can reflect on individual and social meanings of education knows the central theoretical traditions in the social sciences of education
  • has progressed in critical thinking skills.

The course is a 5 cp MOOC course open for anyone on the DigiCampus learning platform. Course can be taken by students from any discipline, the course does not require previous background with educational studies.

This course is a part of the basic studies Lifelong Learning and Sustainable Development that also offer an open university route to a Bachelor Degree Programme of the same name at the University of Eastern Finland. Read more here.

Online course: learning tasks 20 h, learning diary 30 h, individual work 85 h.

Learning tasks are based on the selected parts of the following materials:

  • Simola, H. 2015. The Finnish Education mystery - Historical and Sociological essays on Schooling in Finland
  • Sahlberg, P. 2011. Finnish Lessons. What can the World Learn from Educational change in Finland
  • Jarvis 2010. Adult education and lifelong learning: Theory and practice (renewed 4. edition)
  • Open access articles in Moodle.
  • Learning tasks must be completed by 10.05.2024

If you have been granted temporary protection in Finland (by Migri), this English-language course is free for the academic year 2023-2024.  Please contact training secretary for registration.

The normal study fee is 15 euros per ECTS credit. The study fee is paid at registration.

If the teaching is provided by a partner school of the Open University, the study fee consists of the Open University’s study fee and the partner school’s fee. The study fee is paid when registering for the course. Please find more information: Registration, study fees and right to study | University of Eastern Finland (uef.fi) There is no separate registration or fee for study modules; register for each course individually.

By paying the study fee, the student receives a temporary right to study that entitles them to attend a particular course. The right to study is course-specific, and is required to complete the course as specified in the syllabus for the term, covering both teaching and course exams. If the course is continuously open for registration, the maximum time to complete the course is from 1 August to 31 July for that academic year.

Register for studies

I Click the registration button on this page. You will be directed to our registration service with the study unit already selected. You can add several study units to your study cart before you continue. 

II Proceed to identify yourself using the Suomi.fi service, fill in your personal information to the registration form, confirm your registration and pay the study fees. If you cannot use the Suomi.fi service, please contact our training secretary, their information can be found below.

III Your registration will typically be processed in 2-5 working days. During peak registration periods, this may take up to 10 days. After this period, you will get an automatic message which includes a link to the starting instructions. Please read and follow the instructions carefully.  

 

If you do not have a UEF username, you will also get instructions for activating one. Access rights will be added to your username when your study right begins.  

 

If you can’t find these messages, remember to check your email’s trash folder, and contact the open university staff if needed.

Students who do not have a Finnish online bank service:

  • You can find more specific contact information for IT-services in UEF website.
  • When you have registered in Open University and activated your UEF username, sign in Digicampus Moodle using your HAKA account. If you have already submitted assignments through your Google account, contact Digicampus Support via email (support@digicampus.fi) to connect the two accounts.HAKA is an information secure user authentication system for Finnish higher education institutions. Your HAKA account is simply the user ID you recieve with your student account in UEF or some other higher education institution.
  • Course key for Digicampus Moodle:  will be announced later with instructions after registration
  • After you have completed the course and your assignments have been evaluated , your credit points will be saved in the study register and you will receive an electronic transcript of records in your email.

Students who have a Finnish online bank service:

  • Register for the course
  • Verify your student account on the next day the earliest using your online bank service (Suomi.fi -identification). UEF account activation in UEF website. The UEF student account includes a student email account and access to differents services such as the library online service (primo.uef.fi), Peppi and other access requiring online services.
  • When you have registered in Open University and activated your UEF username, sign in Digicampus Moodle using your HAKA account. If you have already submitted assignments through your Google account, contact Digicampus Support via email (support@digicampus.fi) to connect the two accounts.HAKA is an information secure user authentication system for Finnish higher education institutions.
