Learning outcomes: The student will be able to:

  • identify the sustainability challenges in boreal forests addressed by the closer-to-nature forest management approach
  • explain the ecological principles of closer-to-nature forest management
  • evaluate how closer-to-nature forest management is implemented in practical forestry
  • analyse the role of decision-making support related to closer-to-nature forest management
  • examine how forest policy promotes closer-to-nature forest management

The course develops the following generic skills: sustainability and responsibility and critical thinking.

Content:

  • Sustainability challenges in boreal forests
  • Ecological principles of closer-to-nature forest management
  • Practical implementation of closer-to-nature forest management in forestry operations
  • Decision-making support and its role within closer-to-nature forest management
  • Forest policy and closer-to-nature forest management

Study material: Lecture materials, assigned literature and research articles.


Target group: For those interested in forestry and Nature-Based Solutions.

Modes of study: Lectures (20 h), individual learning of course materials (42 h), group work and exercises (44 h), Exam in the electronic Exam system at the time given by the teacher. Attendance in group work and exercises is obligatory. Attendance in lectures (at least 80%).

Teaching methods: Blended and distance teaching. Lectures, group work, and exercises are offered in a hybrid format. The course can be completed online, except for the Exam in the EXAM system which can be taken on the University of Eastern Finland campus in Joensuu or Kuopio, or as an EXAM visit.

The course is held between Jan 7th and Feb 19th, 2027. After the lectures, the exam (in EXAM-system) will be open from 15.02.2027 to 19.02.2027. A resit opportunity will also be available from 15.3.2027 to 19.3.2027. More information, the description and timelines of the course can be found from Peppi study guide. In their studies, open university students must adhere to the same schedules and study modes as degree students.

NOTE! This course is offered to open university students as a 4 ECTS credit course only. The field trip mentioned in the Peppi study guide is not available for open university students.

Registration online:

  1. Go to the registration service using the button on this page. You will see information about the course, which you can review before registering. Add the course to your study cart. You can also add other courses to the cart before proceeding. 
  2. Log in via the Suomi.fi service (without Finnish identification methods, choose 'skip identification'), fill in your personal details on the registration form, and confirm your registration. Pay for the studies at the time of registration.
  3. Processing the registration usually takes 2–5 business days, and at most 10 business days. After processing, you will receive an email with a link to the instructions for starting your studies. The message will include a link to our beginning instructions page where you can find all instructions on how to get started. Please read the beginning instructions carefully.

UEF username 

  • If you are studying at the University of Eastern Finland for the first time, you will receive separate instructions on how to activate your UEF username. 
  • If you already have a UEF username, change your password.
