This course introduces students to the commercialisation of health technology innovations. Students learn about sustainability perspectives related to health technology innovations and explore the innovation and growth opportunities created by environmental and social sustainability. In addition, the course examines the specific characteristics of the health technology sector in international business. The course develops the student's ability to analyse and evaluate factors related to growth and internationalisation.

After completing this course, the student is able to:

  • define the key principles of sustainability perspectives in health technology
  • identify innovation practices in business development
  • describe the special characteristics of health technology exports
  • analyse and assess various aspects related to business growth and internationalisation

The target group of the training program is people who develop, produce and use medical devices, as well as those interested in the health technology sector. It is suitable for example for:

  • personnel of health technology companies (especially start-ups) 
  • people starting out in the health technology sector 
  • those working in business positions related to health technology (commercialisation, export, sales, marketing)  
  • those involved in co-creation (research, development, and testing)  
  • persons who use medical devices, are responsible for procurement or supervision of the safe use of devices in the wellbeing services counties and
  • RDI staff and teachers in higher education institutions 

Due to funding requirements, the participant must be a resident of Finland.

The course consists of independent study in an eLearn learning environment (online studies, lecture recordings and online assignments) on your own schedule. It is graded by the successful completion of online tasks as pass/fail. The amount of independent work is c. 27 hours.

The course is open until 15.12.2026. You can work in either English or Finnish.

This course is free of charge for the duration of the JOTPA-funded Terveysteknologian osaamistarpeet-project, which covers the whole period this course is available.

How to register for Open University Studies 

1. Choose your studies 

Go to the registration service using the button on this page. You will see information about the course, which you can review before registering. Add the course to your study cart. You can also add other courses to the cart before proceeding. 

 

2. Identify yourself and confirm your registration 

Log in via the Suomi.fi service, fill in your personal details on the registration form, and confirm your registration. 

 

If you cannot identify yourself via the Suomi.fi then choose ‘Skip identification’. Be prepared to verify your identity with an official ID after registration. 

 

Registration is binding. Please read the Open University payment and cancellation terms before registering. 

 

3. Wait for confirmation and start your studies 

Processing the registration usually takes 2–5 business days, and at most 10 business days. After processing, you will receive an email with a link to the instructions for starting your studies. Please read the instructions carefully. 

 

UEF username 

  • If you are studying at the University of Eastern Finland for the first time, you will receive separate instructions on how to activate your UEF username. 
  • If you already have a UEF username, change your password.
