This course gives you an understanding of the basic operating principles of rechargeable batteries, and reviews material solutions for lithium-ion batteries. It also introduces you to next-generation battery technologies, highlighting their key advantages and limitations. In addition, this course addresses the carbon footprint and other environmental aspects of battery manufacturing. Finally, we discuss the commercial production of battery and battery materials worldwide.
The learning outcome is that you understand the operating principles of rechargeable batteries, the material require-ments of Li-ion batteries, and the production of battery and battery materials in industry.
This course is the first of the three courses of the e-Battery Lab module, followed by How batteries are made (1 ECTS) and Electrochemical testing of batteries (3 ECTS). Thanks to funding from Secle (Jotpa), these courses are free of charge.
An online course on your own schedule during the spring of 2027. You can study the course in English or, for extra challenge, in Finnish. The course opens on the 7th of January, 2027, but you can register for it now.
