University is funding two Proof of Concept-projects by university’s strategic implementation fund

The University of Eastern Finland opened fall 2022 an internal call for Proof of Concept (PoC) funding to accelerate the commercialization of ideas emerging from research.

The funding intends for the creation of clearly defined and tested business ideas that has business potential and that can be utilised later on in the establishment of start-up companies, in licensing for an existing company, or in applications for Business Finland funding (Research to Business funding).

Following Proof of Concept ideas were granted funding:

  • Dogu Baran Aydogan, A.I.V. Instituutti, 20 000 euros. The brain contains neurons that are connected to each other. The internal wiring of the brain is unique to each individual and it changes during disorders. The structural connections in the brain can only be obtained with a technique called tractography. However, tractography is known to have big limitations in its accuracy. The project aims to develop a novel technique that will dramatically improve tractography results. Successful project will provide downstream improvement for all tractography applications that are currently used in the clinics as well as for future applications targeting stroke, neurodegenerative diseases, epilepsy, psychiatric disorders and multiple sclerosis.
  • Juhana Hakumäki: Cerebral arterial aneurysm risk assessment by parametrized MRI, School of Medicine (Institute of Clinical Medicine), 20 000 euros. The project aims at the validation of an MRI- derived imaging parameter in an expanded clinical setting, that is linked to cerebral artery aneurysms and possibly their formation.
