UEF’s international programmes attracted more than 6,000 applications – around 700 study places available

Applications were received evenly across all of the university’s programmes. The majority of applicants, over 90 per cent, came from outside Europe.

The University of Eastern Finland’s Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes taught in English received more than 6,000 applications from 4,381 applicants in the admissions closing on 21 January 2026. Seven Bachelor’s degree programmes and more than 20 Master’s degree programmes, all of them taught in English at UEF, were inviting applications. 

Applications were received evenly across all of the university’s programmes. The majority of applicants, over 90 per cent, came from outside Europe. 

The most popular Bachelor’s degree programmes were the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Information Technology, attracting 255 applicants for the Joensuu Campus and 188 for the Kuopio Campus, and the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Lifelong Learning and Sustainable Development, attracting 150 applicants. 

The most popular Master’s degree programmes were the Master’s Degree Programme in Public Heath attracting 592 applicants, the Master's Degree Programme in Information Technology, attracting 575 applicants, and the Master’s Degree Programme in International Business and Sales Management, attracting 150 applicants 

“At the University of Eastern Finland, programmes taught in English have been continuously developed, and this year too, new and exciting Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes were inviting applications. It is wonderful to see that our high‑quality programmes attract wide interest among international applicants," says Laura Hirsto, Vice Rector. 

Studying in the international degree programmes is free of charge for Finnish citizens and all EU/EEA and Swiss citizens. Citizens of other countries are required to pay a tuition fee of 10,000 euros per academic year as well as an application fee of 100 euros. A limited number of waivers and scholarships are available for selected students who are required to pay tuition fees. 

In addition to the first joint application procedure, a separate application round for the university’s two Erasmus Mundus Master’s programmes also closed on 21 January. The European Forestry and Imaging and Light in Extended Reality (IMLEX) programmes attracted a total of 969 applicants. 

At present, approximately 2,000 international students are studying at the University of Eastern Finland. 

The application period for degree programmes taught in Finnish will take place during the second spring joint application round from 10 March 2026 to 24 March 2026.
