More than 20 Master’s degree programmes and five Bachelor’s degree programmes were inviting applications for admission via the Finnish joint application system in a call closing yesterday, on 17 January 2024. The university’s IT programme, Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Information Technology, attracted the greatest number of individual applicants (1,914). The programme operates on both the Joensuu and Kuopio campuses.

“We have invested in the development of new English-language Bachelor’s programmes in recent years, following our assessment of an increasing demand for them. These programmes now have a student intake of a total of 150 students. The significant growth in the number of applicants to these programmes shows that this investment has been a successful one,” says Academic Rector Tapio Määttä

There were a total of 2,580 applicants for the Bachelor's programmes. The number of applicants increased by 85% compared to last year (1,395 applicants in 2023). The university offers the following Bachelor’s degree programmes in English: Lifelong Learning and Sustainable Development, Social Sciences, Sustainable Forest Bioeconomy, and Information Technology (Joensuu and Kuopio).

For the Master's degree programmes, there were a total of 8,789 applicants. Among the Master's degree programmes, the highest number of applications were submitted to the Master’s Degree Programme in Public Health (1,040 applicants), and to the new Master’s Degree Programme in Accounting and Finance (928 applicants) in the field of business studies. Around 600 students will eventually be admitted to the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes starting in autumn 2024.

Most of the applications, more than 90%, were received from outside Finland. Applications were submitted from all around the world, totalling more than a hundred countries. Currently, the University of Eastern Finland is home to around 2,000 international students.
