Former and current researchers and students of the UEF School of Forest Sciences were recognised with awards presented by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations, IUFRO, in its World Congress in Brazil this October.
Researcher Ruben Valbuena was selected as one of the nine winners of the Outstanding Doctoral Research Award presented in recognition of this doctoral dissertation. Valbuena’s doctoral dissertation was supervised by Professor Matti Maltamo and Professor Petteri Packalen from the UEF School of Forest Sciences, as well as by Researcher Gert-Jan Nabuurs from the European Forest Institute.
Student Luiz Felipe de Castro Galizia, a graduate of the Master’s degree programme in European Forestry, was selected as one of winners of the Best Poster Award in recognition of a poster on his Master’s thesis. He studied at the University of Eastern Finland and at the University of Lleida in Spain. The Best Poster Award was presented to roughly ten people.
Student Shourav Dutta, also from the Master’s degree programme in European Forestry, was presented with the IUFRO Student Award for Excellence in Forest Science. The award recognises outstanding students of forest sciences, seeking to encourage them in their future careers. Dutta studies at the University of Eastern Finland and at the University of Freiburg in Germany. A total of six IUFRO Student Awards for Excellence in Forest Science were presented.
Coordinated by the University of Eastern Finland, the Master's degree programme in European Forestry is a joint programme between UEF and five other leading European universities in the field of forest sciences. Students on the programme study their first year in Joensuu and their second year at one of the partner universities.
The IUFRO World Congress is held every five years, with the previous one taking place in 2014.
