Subij Shakya, a second-year Master's student at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF), shares his journey in public health. From practical health projects to witnessing the northern lights, his experiences at UEF have shaped his aspirations to become a global health leader.
After the COVID-19 pandemic, the world understood the importance of public health," says Subij Shakya, a second-year Master's student in Public Health at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF). Driven by a deep understanding of global health and epidemiology, Subij's background in medicine and desire to broaden his knowledge led him to the Master's in Public Health program at UEF. "The Master's degree in Public Health at UEF is an excellent platform to build a solid foundation of theoretical and practical knowledge on key health issues," he explains. Subij decided that studying health through an interconnected lens and at a global scale would help him in his aspirations of becoming a future global health leader.
Why UEF?
"UEF has been the centre for world-renowned landmark health studies spanning multiple decades. The KIHD (Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease) study is an example of the public health excellence that stems from UEF," Subij notes. Nestled in nature, with nearby lakes and forests, UEF offers an ideal environment for academic pursuits. "The research quality, natural ambience, and the prospect of holistic development through extracurricular activities inspired me to apply to UEF," he adds.
The combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills has been Subij's favorite aspect of his studies. In addition to a deep understanding of public health concepts, he has participated in practical classes on biostatistics, field trips to health projects, and group activities. "This interactive and stimulating method of learning made me fully engaged in the course," he says.
Memorable moments in Finland
Two highlights stand out for Subij during his time in Finland. Witnessing the northern lights for the first time made him feel the true power and beauty of nature. Another memorable experience was the UEF Public Health Camp, which allowed students to bond with nature, friends, and teachers. The campfire event was filled with singing and laughter, and on the last day, they enjoyed a sauna followed by a dip in the nearby lake.
Finland is a country which prioritises justice and happiness. There is great attention to ensure all systems are fair and organised. In addition, the concepts of work-life balance allow us to enjoy all aspects of life," Subij observes. "Kuopio is a gem nestled in Finland. It is filled with lakes and forests, which change into vibrant colours with each season. Yet, the city centre is so near to all these sights of nature. There is a love for the arts in this city and creativity in the air."
Encouragement for prospective students and future plans
Subij encourages prospective students to explore the study-life balance, holistic opportunities, academic excellence, and proximity to nature that UEF is renowned for. The institution has helped him grow into a well-rounded person, and he hopes other students get the same opportunity.
After graduation, Subij plans on tackling the inequalities that exist in global health. "My mission is to be a global health leader. I aim to promote health through my core principles of equity, sustainability, and altruism," he states.
