Venla Olsson.

New regional manager for Neurocenter Finland’s Kuopio Brain & Mind network

Venla Olsson’s first duties as Kuopio Brain & Mind’s new regional manager include preparations for the Kuopio Neuroscience 50 Years symposium taking place next summer.

Kuopio Brain & Mind, operating in the Eastern Finland region, is one of the six regional networks of Neurocenter Finland. Members of Kuopio Brain & Mind include scholars and professionals working in brain health, neuroscience  and psychiatry research at the University of Eastern Finland and the North Savo Wellbeing Services County.

Kuopio Brain & Mind strives to promote the success of top-level neuroscience in Eastern Finland, support collaboration between universities, hospitals and businesses, and advance patients’ rights and involvement in research. The goal is to maintain and improve brain health throughout the lifespan by better understanding the mechanisms of diseases, enhancing early diagnostics and developing personalised medical applications for brain disorders through multidisciplinary approaches.

Venla Olsson, PhD, started as the new regional manager of Kuopio Brain & Mind in November. Olsson earned her doctoral degree in molecular medicine in 2022, with her dissertation focusing on developing gene therapy and immunotherapy for malignant glioma. Meaningful work in neuroscience and brain health is close to her heart. “It has been an honour to join this multidisciplinary community to promote neuroscience from a new perspective,” Olsson says.

Anniversary symposium in Kuopio next summer will bring together leading national and international experts in the field

A significant upcoming highlight in the activities of Kuopio Brain & Mind next year is the Kuopio Neuroscience 50 Years symposium, to be held at the Kuopio Music Centre  on 15–17 June  2026. Preparations are already well underway. The symposium will bring together leading experts in the field at both the national and international levels, focusing on the latest advances in the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases. The theme of the symposium is Pathogenesis, Early Diagnosis and Modern Care of Neurodegenerative Diseases, Epilepsy and Stroke. Thanks to its multidisciplinary programme, experts will have the opportunity to share groundbreaking insights and promote meaningful dialogue.

Venla Olsson has already had the chance to get involved in the preparations for the symposium. Registration and abstract submission will open in January. “We have wonderful facilities to come together to hear top-level scientific presentations and to celebrate the successful 50-year history of neurosciences in Kuopio. We warmly welcome all members, partners and collaborators from the Kuopio Brain & Mind area and from other Neurocenter Finland regional networks to Kuopio next June!”
