New data engineering education will be launched in Joensuu and Kuopio in autumn 2026 with a student intake of 120

The new data engineering education leading to the Master of Science (Technology) degree will strengthen the University of Eastern Finland’s education in technology. The Ministry of Education and Culture confirmed the university’s new educational responsibility on 23 January.

The new data engineering education leading to the Master of Science (Technology) degree will be launched at the University of Eastern Finland in autumn 2026 with an initial student intake of 120 students on the Joensuu and Kuopio campuses. The degrees available in the data engineering programmes are the Bachelor of Science (Technology), the Master of Science (Technology), and the Doctor of Science (Technology) degrees.

“The new data engineering education will significantly strengthen the University of Eastern Finland’s education in technology, and it is also an important new opening for eastern Finland more broadly. I believe that in the coming years, our data engineering education will alleviate the shortage of skilled workforce that is currently limiting the growth of many companies in this region,” Rector Tapio Määttä says.

Määttä notes that up until now, the University of Eastern Finland has been the only Finnish university offering education in technology without the possibility to confer Master of Science (Technology) degrees, and only offering Master of Science degrees in computer science.

“Up to 56% of our MSc graduates in computer science find employment in Eastern Finland, but only 3% of other universities’ computer science graduates holding an MSc in Technology secure employment in this region. This is to say that there is an evident need for this new education,” Määttä says.

The Government and the Ministry of Education and Culture made the decision on Finnish universities’ new educational responsibilities on 23 January. The University of Eastern Finland submitted its proposal on the right to offer education in information and communication technology to the Ministry of Education and Culture last March.

Education in technology was launched in at the University of Eastern Finland in autumn 2023, in photonics and in sustainable technologies on the Joensuu Campus, and in technical physics on the Kuopio Campus.

At the University of Eastern Finland, the new data engineering education will include data science, statistics and software engineering, with each of them given an equal emphasis. The data engineering education is based on the university’s existing expertise in computer and data science. Currently, the university has some 30 professors in fields that pertain to data engineering, and the university is also in the process of negotiating new endowed professorships with regional financiers and companies in eastern Finland.
