Hilkka Soininen and Johanna Kuusisto ranked in the top 1,000 female scientists in the world

In a recent ranking published by Research.com, Professor Emerita Hilkka Soininen and Professor Johana Kuusisto of the University of Eastern Finland and Kuopio University Hospital were ranked in the top 1,000 female scientists in the world, along with a total of 11 Finnish female scientists.

The ranking by Research.com is based on the number of publications and citations.

Hilkka Soininen has worked as Professor of Neurology at the University of Eastern Finland and as Chief Physician at Kuopio University Hospital. She is an internationally recognised scholar of dementia and especially Alzheimer’s disease. Soininen has led a number of domestic, international and EU-level research projects and consortia, and she has been the principal investigator of a number of clinical trials related to Alzheimer’s disease and mild cognitive impairment. In recent years, her research has focused on the diagnostics, treatment and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.

Johanna Kuusisto works as Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Eastern Finland and as Chief Physician at Kuopio University Hospital. For two decades already, Kuusisto has been studying cardiomyopathy in the Finnish population. The national FinHCM study led by Kuusisto has shed light on the genetic background, clinical picture and prognosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in Finnish patients. The currently ongoing CardioPath project led by Kuusisto is looking for yet unknown genetic mutations and investigating related disease mechanisms in patient-derived cell and tissue models. Another research interest of Kuusisto is atherosclerotic vascular disease, and she is the co-PI of the extensive METSIM study focusing on the biomarkers and genetics of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
