Best Master’s Thesis Award in Optics presented to Roman Calpe, Madona Mekhael and  Afifa Rahman

The Best Master’s Thesis Award in Optics presented to Roman Calpe, Madona Mekhael and Afifa Rahman.

The Award is funded  by a donation from Huawei Technologies Oy (Finland). The award is presented in recognition of a notable Master’s thesis in the field of photonics, acknowledging Master’s thesis work which has made significant use of, or a significant contribution to, photonics. The award amounts to 2,000 euros, and a total of three awards are presented each year.

Photonics/optics is defined as the fields of science and engineering encompassing the physical phenomena and technologies associated with the generation, transmission, manipulation, detection, and utilisation of light. It covers electromagnetic spectrum from ultraviolet (UV) light through visible light to infrared (IR) light.

The achievements of the theses were the determination of the Stokes parameters of the laser light at the source plane and in the far field for various particle diameters; observed enhancement of second harmonic generation efficiency at the lattice resonance wavelength; and optimization of the synthesis of graphene-based membranes for toxic industrial gasses by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

“Both industry and research on photonics are growing strongly in Finland and elsewhere in the world. All three Theses were excellent quality with the grading 5/5. All winners of the award have plenty of exciting opportunities ahead their career,” tells Professor Jyrki Saarinen.
