Associate Professor Liz Gwyther from the University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa will give a talk on
African Palliative Care Association (APCA) in the Development of Palliative Care in Africa
The seminar will be hosted by Professor Reino Pöyhiä.
Associate professor Liz Gwyther, MD, PhD, the founder of the academic palliative care in South Africa, is an internationally acknowledged pioneer of palliative medicine and belongs to the great ladies of palliative medicine in the world. She was born in Zimbabwe and studied medicine at the University of Cape Town graduating in 1979 with MB ChB. She received her diploma in palliative medicine 1998 and MSc in palliative medicine in 2003 in the University of Wales, UK, and defended her PhD thesis on “Palliative Care as a part of Right to Health” in 2018 in the University of Cape Town (UCT), where she has been working as an associate professor of palliative medicine. Prof Gwyther`s numeral professional activities include several CEO- and Director positions in South African hospices, in the International Association of Hospice and Palliative Care and in the African Palliative Care Association (APCA). Prof Gwyther has also acted as a Chairperson in the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance and as a consultant to WHO Integrated health Services. Currently, she continues actively research as an emerita professor at UCT. Prof Gwyther has guided several PhD-students in the field of palliative medicine and the list of her publications include over 120 papers in peer-reviewed academic journals and text-books on ethics, psychological and spiritual issues, organizing and PROMS in palliative care. Although prof Gwyther has been an asked lecturer and chairperson in many scientific events around the world, she visiting now in Finland for the first time.
