Contents:

  • talking about everyday life, time, and describing current and future events
  • simple interaction situations, e.g., transactions, shopping, requests, and responding to standard phrases
  • expanding basic language structures (possessive sentences, negative sentences, imperative sentences, and ko/kö-questions)
  • fundamentals of noun declension (including basics of the genitive and partitive cases)
  • home, family, and hobbies

Learning outcomes:

The student briefly describe themselves and ask for and provide information in Finnish. They can respond to standard phrases and handle daily recurring situations, partly with the support of an interaction partner. They understand simple and brief oral and written messages and can produce them themselves. The student can briefly describe their current and future activities. They know basic Finnish vocabulary and structures and are familiar with everyday Finnish life.

The objective is to attain the level A1.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference.

Before registering for this course, the student must have completed the course Finnish 1A or have corresponding knowledge and skills.

Study methods: Active participation in teaching, Independent online study and finishing assignments. Final exam. The student should reserve approximately 54 hours for course work. The successful completion of the course and participating in an exam requires active participation in teaching and the completion of course assignments within the specified schedule.

Schedules: This course will be organized from January 19 to March 5, 2027. Online teaching on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 14-16. Active participation to the lectures is needed to successfully complete the course.

NB! The teaching language on this course is English. You need a B1-B2 level (CEFR scale) in English to be able to successfully complete the course.

Please note that this course requires some previous studies in Finnish language (course Finnish 1A or similar course). Before registering, you can take a course placement test to evaluate if this course is suitable for you.

The study fee is 20 euros per ECTS credit. The study fee is paid at registration. The price holds for the academic year 2026-2027. Please find more information: Registration, study fees and right to study | University of Eastern Finland (uef.fi)

By paying the study fee, the student receives a temporary right to study that entitles them to attend a particular course. The right to study is course-specific, and is required to complete the course as specified in the curriculum, covering both teaching and course exams.

How to register for Open University Studies 

1. Choose your studies 

Go to the registration service using the button on this page. You will see information about the course, which you can review before registering. Add the course to your study cart. You can also add other courses to the cart before proceeding. 

2. Identify yourself and pay 

Log in via the Suomi.fi service, fill in your personal details on the registration form, and confirm your registration. Pay for the studies at the time of registration. 

Registration is binding. Please read the Open University payment and cancellation terms before registering. 

If you cannot identify yourself via the Suomi.fi service but are able to pay using one of the following methods: Google Pay or Apple Pay, Visa or MasterCard, please register in the online service (choose ‘Skip identification’). Otherwise, contact the academic affairs coordinator (contact details below). Be prepared to verify your identity with an official ID after registration. 

If your employer is paying the course fee and you do not have access to a company credit card, contact the academic affairs coordinator before registering. You can find the contact details at the bottom of the page. 

Studies paid with a study voucher: the voucher must be activated in the Opin.fi service before registration and payment. 

3. Wait for confirmation and start your studies 

Processing the registration usually takes 2–5 business days, and at most 10 business days. After processing, you will receive an email with a link to the instructions for starting your studies. Please read the instructions carefully. 

UEF username 

  • If you are studying at the University of Eastern Finland for the first time, you will receive separate instructions on how to activate your UEF username. 
  • If you already have a UEF username, change your password. 

Your username will receive the necessary access rights once your study right begins.
