The course provides an overview of long-term developments in world history from the seventeenth century to today, primarily paying attention to political, economic, social and cultural changes. Given the dominant position of Europe in world history during a large part of the period dealt with, there is a certain focus on European developments, yet crucial changes will be put in a global perspective through comparisons with other parts of the world.

After completing the course, the student will be able to:

- identify long-term developments from the seventeenth century until today;

- assess how developments in different fields of the society went hand in hand and/or contradicted each other;

- analyse the process of modernisation critically;

- interpret current global trends through their long-term historical roots and take them no longer for granted.

Please check Peppi-study guide for more information about the study module.

The course is evaluated on the basis of an examination in the EXAM-system (75%), in combination with an assignment on a topic given by the lecturer (25%). Students have the opportunity to submit a first version of their assignment, to receive feedback, and to improve their assignment on the basis of this feedback when submitting their final version.
