Mode of study 2
Essays on a topic given by the teacher; independent reading (90h), independent writing (45h).
The first essay consists of a critical review of a general book on the history of ideas in Europe (the book title will be chosen in consultation with the teacher). In the second essay, students have to place two leading figures from two ‘opposed’ intellectual and cultural movements in European history opposite to each other. By contrasting the particular ideas of two leading personalities in detail (by using primary writings by these authors), the aim is to summarise and explain the central ideas of both movements in general.
Please contact the teacher to receive more detailed instructions concerning this mode of study.
The student
- is able to characterise the major intellectual and cultural movements in European history
- is aware of how one ideological movement originated from and related itself to previous ideas, but how at the same time it did not have to result from developments in the past
- realises and assesses the continuous contradictions in intellectual and cultural history.
The course will be offered for students in major and minor, students of continuous learning and also for student from the UEF Open University.
