Learning outcomes: The student will be able to:
- Define the basic concepts and methods applied in remote sensing and geoinformatics
- Identify different remotely sensed data types and handle them using geospatial software
- Describe how remote sensing is utilised in forest research
- Describe the main advantages and restrictions of remote sensing
- Interpret statistical models applied in the prediction of forest attributes
Contens: Physical fundamentals and basic concepts of remote sensing and basic concepts of geoinformatics. The basic concepts of aerial and satellite imaging, laser scanning and microwave remote sensing. The basics of handling and processing of remote sensing data using geospatial software. Utilisation of remote sensing in forest research.
Study materials: Materials and exercises available online.
Target group: For those interested in forestry and remote sensing and geoinformatics.
Modes of study: Completion of MOOC course modules (6 x 5 h), exercises (15 h) and independent studying (36 h). Each module comprises a theoretical part (video and text contents), practical exercises, and an online exam.
Teaching methods: MOOC-online course, available in DigiCampus.

The course is available online between Aug 1st, 2026 and July 30th, 2027. The completed MOOC course credits are recorded four times a year: at the end of September, December, March and May. To receive course credits, all assignments must be completed by the 15th day of the month in which the evaluations take place. In their studies, open university students must adhere to the same schedules and study modes as degree students.
This course is an optional course in Basic studies in forest sciences (Metsätieteen perusopintokokonaisuus). Other courses of the basic studies are taught in Finnish.
