Content: Reading and writing assignments on the use of academic and professional English relevant to the field, oral individual and group assignments, and oral presentations and discussions. Appropriate reading strategies, the structure of scientific articles in English, linking words between concepts, general scientific and field-specific vocabulary.

Learning outcomes:

  • discuss topics related to their field in English
  • select appropriate reading strategies
  • identify vocabulary typical of academic English and terminology specific to their field
  • present summaries of reading material
  • write texts related to their field of study with sufficient fluency
  • prepare and give a structured presentation on a topic related to their field of study
  • give and receive constructive feedback, and develop their skills based on received feedback
  • work individually and with others, and self-evaluate their learning

Study methods: Online teaching: The student should reserve 81 hours for the course. The course includes lectures, spoken and written pair and group exercises, and independent study. The student is required to actively participate in teaching which can be for all the group or in small groups, online teaching, in which the student must participate in the manner specified by the teacher.  Adequate technical equipment (e.g., a sufficiently fast network connection, headphones, microphone, and webcam) and the ability to use the required technology are required for online participation. 

Schedule: 19.1.–5.3.2027. Online lessons on Tuesdays at 14-16, on 19.1., 26.1., 2.2., 9.2., 23.2., 2.3. The first lesson (19.1.) is compulsory.

Prerequisite: B2 level in English o the CEFR scale.

Individual courses are 20 euros per ECTS credit. The prices are valid for the 2026-2027 academic year.

How to register for Open University Studies 

1. Choose your studies 

Go to the registration service using the button on this page. You will see information about the course, which you can review before registering. Add the course to your study cart. You can also add other courses to the cart before proceeding. 

2. Identify yourself and pay 

Log in via the Suomi.fi service, fill in your personal details on the registration form, and confirm your registration. Pay for the studies at the time of registration. 

Registration is binding. Please read the Open University payment and cancellation terms before registering. 

If you cannot identify yourself via the Suomi.fi service but are able to pay using one of the following methods: Google Pay or Apple Pay, Visa or MasterCard, please register in the online service (choose ‘Skip identification’). Otherwise, contact the student affairs secretary (contact details below). Be prepared to verify your identity with an official ID after registration. 

If your employer is paying the course fee and you do not have access to a company credit card, contact the student affairs secretary before registering. You can find the contact details at the bottom of the page. 

Studies paid with a study voucher: the voucher must be activated in the Opin.fi service before registration and payment. 

3. Wait for confirmation and start your studies 

Processing the registration usually takes 2–5 business days, and at most 10 business days. After processing, you will receive an email with a link to the instructions for starting your studies. Please read the instructions carefully. 

UEF username 

  • If you are studying at the University of Eastern Finland for the first time, you will receive separate instructions on how to activate your UEF username. 
  • If you already have a UEF username, change your password. 

Your username will receive the necessary access rights once your study right begins.
