Contents: During the course, students practice oral and written communication related to their discipline and profession in English. Students are introduced to the writing process and drafting of presentations, learn vocabulary specific to their field, and rehearse and give an oral presentation on a topic in the subject. Students also prepare a written assignment on a topic in their field of study.

Learning outcomes: The student can/is able to:

  • Discuss topics related to their field in English
  • Apply intercultural communication skills as well as English language conventions in discussions, presentations and other oral assignments
  • Write texts related to their field with sufficient fluency
  • Prepare and give a clear presentation on a topic related to their field
  • Give and receive constructive feedback and develop their skills based on the feedback provided
  • Work independently and in a group and evaluate their own learning.

Academic English course according to UEF degree requirements

Study method: The student is required to actively participate in online teaching which can be for all the group or in small groups. The course includes, for example, written individual and group assignments and discussions. Open University students must reserve 54 hours of studying for the course. It is completed as 2 ECTS.

Teaching is carried out as online/remote learning. Active participation in online learning and the course includes assignments and exercises.

Scheduled classes are compulsory. Adequate technical equipment (e.g., a sufficiently fast network connection, headphones, microphone, and webcam) and the ability to use the required technology are required for online participation.

Schedule: 28.1.-4.3.2027. The first lesson on Thursday 28.1.2027 at 8-10 is compulsory.

Additionally, the presentation sessions (5 × 2 hours), of which the student attends one:

Mon 1.3. at 12-14, 14-16 
Wed 3.3. at 12-14, 14-16 
Thu 4.3. at 8-10

Prerequisite: B2 level in English on the CEFR scale.

Individual courses are 20 euros per ECTS credit. The prices are valid for the 2026-2027 academic year.

How to register for Open University Studies 

1. Choose your studies 

Go to the registration service using the button on this page. You will see information about the course, which you can review before registering. Add the course to your study cart. You can also add other courses to the cart before proceeding. 

2. Identify yourself and pay 

Log in via the Suomi.fi service, fill in your personal details on the registration form, and confirm your registration. Pay for the studies at the time of registration. 

Registration is binding. Please read the Open University payment and cancellation terms before registering. 

If you cannot identify yourself via the Suomi.fi service but are able to pay using one of the following methods: Google Pay or Apple Pay, Visa or MasterCard, please register in the online service (choose ‘Skip identification’). Otherwise, contact the student affairs secretary (contact details below). Be prepared to verify your identity with an official ID after registration. 

If your employer is paying the course fee and you do not have access to a company credit card, contact the student affairs secretary before registering. You can find the contact details at the bottom of the page. 

Studies paid with a study voucher: the voucher must be activated in the Opin.fi service before registration and payment. 

3. Wait for confirmation and start your studies 

Processing the registration usually takes 2–5 business days, and at most 10 business days. After processing, you will receive an email with a link to the instructions for starting your studies. Please read the instructions carefully. 

UEF username 

  • If you are studying at the University of Eastern Finland for the first time, you will receive separate instructions on how to activate your UEF username. 
  • If you already have a UEF username, change your password. 

Your username will receive the necessary access rights once your study right begins.
