University of Eastern Finland invests 4 million euros to recruit internationally distinguished, top-level professors

The University of Eastern Finland is launching a major recruitment initiative to attract internationally distinguished scholars to permanent, full-time professorships.

Between 2026 and 2029, the university will invest over 4 million euros in recruitment packages intended to attract internationally distinguished professors. This funding will be put towards covering the professor’s and their research group members’ salary costs, as well as other research expenses. Each professor will receive a minimum of 1.3 million euros of strategic funding from the university and its faculties during their first three years of employment.

“With this major strategic funding – remarkable even by international standards – we seek to attract leading researchers from across the world to strengthen our interdisciplinary research profile. These support packages will allow us to create an environment that is competitive for the recruited professors and their research teams here at the University of Eastern Finland,” says Jussi Pihlajamäki, Vice Rector for Research.

Recruitment proposals are currently being sought from the university’s research communities and department heads. Based on these proposals, the university’s rectors will decide on the recruitment packages for three professors in December 2025.
