UEF Institute of Photonics is now known as Center for Photonics Sciences

In early November, the Institute of Photonics at the University of Eastern Finland changed its name to the Center for Photonics Sciences.

The name change is linked to the newly opened Photonics Center in Joensuu, in which the University of Eastern Finland participates. Photonics Center is located on the Joensuu Campus, in the same building as most of the university’s photonics-related activities. The Center for Photonics Sciences now also has a new logo.

The Center for Photonics Sciences has been operating at the University of Eastern Finland for nine years. It serves as an umbrella for all research and education in photonics and optics at the University of Eastern Finland. The Center for Photonics Sciences is multidisciplinary, hosting a unique combination of experts in the fields of biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, and applied physics. Its roots date back to the establishment of the University of Joensuu more than 50 years ago, as photonics was an important field of research already then. Today, the Center for Photonics Sciences is recognised as a world-class research environment.
