The Research Council of Finland’s Scientific Council for Biosciences, Health and the Environment has granted 6.6 million euros of funding to five new Academy Research Fellows, one Clinical Researcher and seven new Academy Projects at the University of Eastern Finland.
In total, the Scientific Council granted funding to 38 Academy Researchers, 12 Clinical Researchers, and 76 Academy Projects. The total amount of funding is slightly over 78 million euros.
The applications submitted to the Scientific Council were generally of a high standard. The Council was pleased to see so many multidisciplinary and bold applications. In addition to excellent science, the applications showed great potential for results that have societal impact.
Funding Granted at the University of Eastern Finland
Academy Research Fellow funding was awarded to Postdoctoral researcher Henna Jäntti, Senior Researcher Dan Kou, Postdoctoral researcher Hanne Laakso, Senior Researcher Prasanthi Medarametla and Postdoctoral researcher Tuomas Yrttimaa. The total amount of funding is 3 million euros. The clinical researcher funding was awarded to Postdoctoral Researcher Jani Liimatta (239 124 euros). Fundings are awarded for four years.
The Academy projects of the University of Eastern Finland were granted a total of 3.5 million euros in funding. Fundings are awarded for four years.
- Associate Professor Kristiina Huttunen’s project ”Utilization of Membrane Transporters for Multilevel Targeted Drug Delivery (Brain-Mito-Delivery)” 600 000 euros.
- Professor Jukka Kekäläinen’s project ”Genetic incompatibility of the reproductive partners – Molecular mechanisms and health consequences”, 591 558 euros
- Professor Ville Leinonen’s project ”Cellular origins of disrupted memory: How Alzheimer's Disease -related pathology impairs brain plasticity in humans”, 500 000 euros
- Professor Tarja Malm’s project ”Cellular origins of disrupted memory: How Alzheimer's Disease -related pathology impairs brain plasticity in humans”, 499 837 euros
- Professor Jaakko Pohjoismäki’s project ”Uncovering the coevolution of mitochondrial function and cell cycle regulation in shaping life history strategies”, 499 243 euros
- Professor Pirkko Pussinen’s project ”Revealing the causal role of the oral microbiome in health and disease”, 250 034 euros
- Professor Reijo Sund’s project ”New Approaches for Monitoring Effectiveness and Equity of Health Systems (NAMEES)”, 591 889 euros.
The Research Council for Biosciences, Health and the Environment of the Academy of Finland made the funding decisions on 16 June.
