New open-access book: Resilience as Deterrence

The book “Resilience as Deterrence: Towards a Comprehensive Security Panorama” is out.

  • Alicja Fajfer

The book is a must-read for researchers, policy makers, border security professionals and representatives of civil society organizations. The book was edited by Professor Jussi P. Laine from KTL and Professor Bo Petersson from the Department of Global Political Studies at Malmö University. This title is available open-access and in e-book format.

This publication is a selection of peer-reviewed contributions from the Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) funded by NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Program and held last year in Joensuu, Finland. This workshop was an endeavor to develop comprehensive approaches to resilience and deterrence transcending military perspectives, as a response to Russia’s aggressive behavior and hybrid warfare tactics in Europe. The workshop’s location near Finland’s eastern border highlights a reality where security challenges are the lived experience of communities along Europe’s eastern borders. The workshop brought together over 130 international participants from different disciplines, which brought forward new insights and innovative approaches to contemporary security challenges.

The chapters cover topics from Russia’s shifting strategies and hybrid warfare tactics to the role of borders in building resilience, human aspects of security, and NATO’s collective identity in the post-invasion era. The diversity of perspectives, including academic research, policy analysis, and practical experience from border security professionals, provides a comprehensive view of the challenges and opportunities facing the international security community.
