The leading neuroscience experts of the world convene to present the latest research and together envisage the future when the Kuopio Neuroscience 50 Years symposium is held in the Kuopio Music Centre on 15–17 June 2026.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Chair of Neurology at the then University of Kuopio in 1976. Neuroscience research and patient care in Kuopio have developed in strong international cooperation. Kuopio has organised high-level international symposia on Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy and cerebrovascular disorders in alternating years for more than 25 years. The events have had hundreds of participants from Finland and abroad, and in the past few years, also a large number of remote participants. The symposia have repeatedly been praised for their scientific quality.
The aim is to continue this tradition in the 50th anniversary symposium. The high-quality scientific programme brings together the key research areas in neuroscience in Kuopio, the highlights of its history, and the latest advances in science and clinical care. The 2026 theme of the symposium is Pathogenesis, Early Diagnosis and Modern Care of Neurodegenerative Diseases, Epilepsy and Stroke. Leading international experts of the field share the latest information from research and promote open scientific debate.
Professor of Neurology Reetta Kälviäinen emphasises that the symposium offers both clinicians and researchers of the field a unique opportunity to examine the developments in neuroscience and to envisage future research and patient care.
Registration for the event will be open until the end of May. It is also possible to participate remotely, and those who have registered will have access to the presentations of the event until the end of August. The event is organised by the University of Eastern Finland, the Wellbeing services county of North Savo and Neurocenter Finland. The organising committee warmly welcomes the entire national and international neuroscience community to the symposium in June.
