The American Association of Geographers (AAG) presents the award to political geographers in honour of their contributions that have generated new interest in the subfield and opened up new areas of inquiry.
Postdoctoral Researcher Azmeary Ferdoush from the Karelian institute has received the Stanley D. Brunn Junior Scholar Award. The American Association of Geographers (AAG) presents the award to political geographers in honour of their contributions that have generated new interest in the subfield and/or opened up new areas of inquiry. The laureate must have completed their doctoral degree within 10 years. The award ceremony took place during the AAG annual meeting on 26th March in Denver.
Azmeary Ferdoush is an Academy of Finland postdoctoral researcher whose work supports the UEF’s strategic research in the field of borders, mobilities and cultural encounters. He is interested in exploring the way man-made ideas of borders and bounded spaces affect human mobility, while remaining critical about “importing” ready-made ideas from the Global North to the Global South. His current project explores whether, why, and how the state creates a situation where refugees and asylum seekers are kept indeterminately waiting. The project is geographically focused on the Rohingya refugees in the camps of Bangladesh and the asylum seekers residing in different reception centres in Finland.
