Andrea Estefanía Ramos Huapaya came to Finland looking for a challenge, academically and personally. Today, she is pursuing a Master’s Degree Programme in Forestry at the University of Eastern Finland, and her journey has been full of growth, resilience, and unforgettable experiences.
From Peru to Finland’s Forests
“I was looking for a Master’s program related to Forestry and something that could help me improve my skills both academically and personally. I wanted a real challenge in every sense,” Andrea says.
Her decision to choose UEF was inspired by trusted voices and a vision for the future. “First, a professor from my university in Peru told me about Finland and how the forests are used, in the right way! Then, some close friends mentioned that one important Erasmus Programme started at UEF. So I thought, if I want to start a European adventure related to the academic field, why not UEF? Furthermore, UEF has cutting-edge technology for research and innovation. In fact, I would love to become a researcher! I strongly believe that UEF can help me reach both my personal and academic fulfillment.”
Andrea appreciates the way UEF fosters critical thinking. “I strongly believe that UEF and the Forest School foster critical thinking in students! The study plan at UEF focuses more on analysis and critical thinking than just memorizing concepts or definitions.”

Finding balance between study, nature, and personal growth
Life in Finland has brought new joys. “I really appreciate how nature is part of everyday life here, walking in the forest, hiking and even extreme bicycling. Also, as an international student, I found a wonderful group of friends. We support each other and try to enjoy every moment together, the winter, the darkness and the sunlight.”
But the transition wasn’t easy. “The weather was the biggest challenge because I am from a tropical country (Peru)! The darkness during winter was quite extreme. Everything was dark, there were no animals, few people outside and I could almost feel a sense of depression and anxiety in the air. It’s hard to explain. The first month felt exciting, but later, the feeling of despair grew stronger. However, I managed to cope by connecting with others (my friends) while also learning to rely on myself. The experience pushed me to grow in my own identity, develop resilience, and embrace the challenges as part of becoming more independent.”
Andrea has grown to appreciate Finnish culture and Joensuu’s calm atmosphere. “I really appreciate how people respect personal space and small talk in Finland. For me, Joensuu feels like a small village with entertainment options that everyone should take time to discover. In addition, thanks to Finland, I feel more self-independent and empowered.”
Her advice to future students is clear: “In Europe, Finland is the best place to study anything related to forests and natural resources. If you want to learn from the best, you have to go to Finland!”
Looking ahead, Andrea is open to new opportunities. “Honestly, I’m open to new experiences that help me improve my skills, social, academic, language and more.”
“UEF is more than just studying and enjoying nature, it helps you find a balance between academic and personal life.”
