Alwin Hardenbol wins British Ecology Society’s Capturing Ecology photography competition

Alwin Hardenbol, a PhD student at the School of Forest Sciences of the University of Eastern Finland, has been announced as the Overall Winner of the British Ecological Society’s annual Capturing Ecology photography competition.

Hardenbol’s winning image, titled by him as The Art of Flight, captures a flying Dalmatian Pelican, which he photographed at lake Kerkini in Greece. According to Hardenbol, it took thousands of tries before he was finally happy with the winning shot.

“I am very happy with this prize. I have been photographing nature from a young age but only recently has this passion turned more professional, including victories in competitions. Nature photography and my studies in ecology are quite a perfect combination, although it is always tough to find enough time for photography. In my PhD I study the dynamics of deciduous trees and cavities made by woodpeckers in Finnish, mainly old-growth, forests,” Hardenbol says.
