The Department of Health and Social Management is the leading research unit and provider of Master’s degree education in health and social sciences. High-quality study programmes are offered to Master’s degree and doctoral students in three major subjects: Health and Social Management, Health and Human Services Informatics, and Health Economics. The key research themes at the department are the management, organisation, economics, informatics, and effectiveness of health and social services. The department’s guiding principles are internationality, multidisciplinarity, and having an impact on society. Founded in 1979, the Department of Health and Social Management is located in the Kuopio Campus.

The department’s international, multidisciplinary research produces new information on the issues of management, organisation, economics, and information management in health and social care. using innovative approaches and methods. The research carried out at the department is linked to two of the university’s multidisciplinary emerging research areas: Effectiveness in Health Care and Social Services and Learning in Digitised Society.
The research group of Health and Social Management addresses the integration, management and organisation of health and social services in work communities, organisations, and society. The research group of Health and Human Services Informatics focuses on the organisation and steering of information management, the use of information and communication technology, knowledge management, and data models and structures. The research group of Health Economics analyses and evaluates the overall operations and functionality of the health and social services system from the viewpoint of economic science. All the research groups prioritise effectiveness and social impact in their research.

Master’s degree students graduating from the Department of Health and Social Management have versatile career opportunities in demanding expert and management positions in public, private and third sector organisations. The education offered at the department is based on high-quality research and a connection between theory and practice, addressing the issues of management, organisation, economics and information management in health and social care. Scientific postgraduate education is offered under the multidisciplinary Doctoral Programme in Welfare, Health and Management. The department also plays an active role in the Open University and the promotion of continuous learning.
