This year’s LUMAT Research Symposium will be organized at the University of Eastern Finland, on Joensuu campus, on the 16th of June 2023 alongside the LUMA-päivät (in Finnish). Our symposium program consists of two keynote speeches and oral presentations of the newest research on Science Education. The event is free of charge and you will also have the possibility to participate remotely.
The theme of this year’s symposium will be Out of the Classroom – Innovative learning environments.
LUMAT Research Symposium is held by LUMA Centre Finland.

Docent Tuomas Aivelo, University of Helsinki
Entering the rat world: secondary school students doing science on urban near-environment species
Tuomas Aivelo is a researcher in the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Helsinki and in the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Oulu. He runs Helsinki Urban Rat Project, which is a multidisciplinary research project on human-rat cohabitation ranging from ecology and science education to social sciences and visual arts. Aivelo is both a disease ecologist and science education researcher and recently his interest has turned more and more to human-wildlife coexistence and relationality. Additionally, he is an awarded science communicator whose non-fiction book Loputtomat loiset (Endless Parasites) has received multiple awards and has been translated into Hungarian, Japanese and Spanish.

Professor Jouni Pursiainen, University of Oulu
STEM subjects and us – aspects in the sustainable development of societies, common knowledge and Finnish education
Scientific knowledge has caused a fundamental revolution in human life. STEM subjects are essential for well-being, sustainable development of societies and education. Jouni Pursiainen is a chemistry professor at the University of Oulu. As the director of the LUMA Centre of the University of Oulu, he is interested in science education and the popularization of science. He also has studied the consequences of subject choices in upper secondary school.
